"I am a self taught artist with ever changing styles and believe that water-colour is arguably the least forgiving medium to paint in. But despite that I believe it suits my style, which could be described as sometimes loose and impressionistic, sometimes whimsical and witty in a simple naïve almost childlike perspective, but always full of strong and warm colours."

"I enjoy experimenting with paint, colour, composition and texture and like to introduce different techniques into my work using a variety of media, working layer upon layer. I ultimately aim to produce 'harmonious compositions'.
Roger Bell

"Roger makes sculptural work in clay and mixed media for interior display or externally in gardens or the walls of buildings. Main areas of exploration are inspired by the jigsaw, metal cans and buildings, through the body, militarism and religion sometimes intrude."

"I am currently producing a range of decorative, slip casted, ceramic pieces which in the beginning, were inspired by the forms and precision of musical instruments. I have developed a range of strikingly coloured glazes to compliment these simple forms which I spray wire over."

"I take photographs for the satisfaction of 'seeing' a potential image in the landscape, searching around an area for the best viewpoint, arranging the elements within the camera viewfinder and capturing the moment that best expresses the vision I ‘saw."

"As an artist I specialize in hand-painted silk collage, discovering places whilst walking and recording images with photography from which I can develop stylized designs. Having always been a silk painter I developed the hand-painted silk collage medium as I found it enabled me to lift a simple composition with vibrant colour and a crisp line."

"My work looks at how to achieve a better representation of our environment using the language of painting. It sources a number of influences from Hockney to Guston. I am particularly interested in Hockney’s recent joiner photos, multi-viewpoint paintings and the “post cubist” ideas involved with this work. I want to capture the process of observation and seeing rather than just a single viewpoint in space and time."
Janis Goodman
Printmaker
"I am a printmaker and have been working professionally for over fifteen years creating etchings and aquatints, which reflect both my architectural training and my love of both the inner city and familiar parts of the countryside - places where I walk or visit friends. The work is both detailed and atmospheric using line and aquatint to give tone and shading to the prints."
Karen Griffiths
Red Ragwork
"I use both of the traditional Ragwork techniques, hooking and prodding while the backing to each piece is hessian. I create largely domestic items such as tea cosies, cushions and bag. My inspirations comes from the work of Indian embroiders and the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales."

Metal
"Our desire is to create sculpture which not only complements and enhances the landscape into which it is placed but also provokes thought and contemplation, pleasing the mind as well as the eye. Our pieces have resonance because they are created through traditional blacksmithing methods, yet the resultant forms are vibrant, energetic and contemporary."
Cecelia Heyne
Acrylic and Oil
"Cecelia works in a variety of styles including abstracts, surrealist mindscapes with their sense of depth, fullness and weightlessness, and two-dimensional design-oriented canvases, inspired by the totemic culture of Southern Africa. These works contrast with her earlier bustling, people-filled canvases of rural African scenes."

"My photographic work encompasses close ups of things that we all too often pass by; the intimate details of the subject rather than the bigger picture. I have always been drawn towards nature and naturally occurring materials; the textures, the colours, the patterns formed by grasses, leaves, water on sand along with man's use of natural materials."

"Art can tell a thousand rich and poignant tales; in my work inspiration is drawn from quirks in personality and the moving and humorous associations which these characters, whilst in the process of interacting with each other, can inspire. With a dash of imagination or a dusting of humor, the absurdity of certain ordinary events can reveal exquisitely touching scenes."

Paintings and Prints
I aim to re-create the atmosphere of Yorkshire’s unique scenery and beautiful skies, incorporating the familiar figures of farmers contemplating the countryside or having a friendly chat. The posture of the figures in my prints is an important aspect which I pay particular attention to when working on a design. All my pieces are Drypoint/Monoprints. All the prints are individual and hand printed in several layers using an intaglio press.

Crafts
"Using trees which have been damaged in some way by nature, whether it be storms or disease, or trees which have been taken down for environmental reasons, I strip away the layers of bark and wood on a journey of discovery to find features nature has hidden within. Then, using simple shapes to encapsulate nature’s artistry, I aim to create an item of elegance and beauty."

"To capture the inherent balance and graceful beauty of a fleeting moment in nature using harsh, artificial and enduring media of wire is my challenge. I am constantly exploring the subtle compromise between scale, simplicity and detail; the gaps between the wire are just important as the lines which I choose to describe and the viewers imagination is key when experiencing my sculpture."

I have studied at Bentham Pottery via Craven College courses for the last 6 years, together with a selection of summer schools. I realised my interests lay in hand building to produce natural shapes and trying various types of clay and of decoration. Now being equipped with gas and electric kilns at home I have the opportunity to try different firing techniques, which is very satisfying.”

The paintings, mainly in oils, respond to the moods of weather, light and season and are often imaginary evocations of places based on memory and drawings in the field. The drawings usually use natural found materials such as peat and sheep droppings to a greater or lesser degree and often there is an element of the weather in these pieces. Thus the drawings are direct and the paintings indirect responses.
